I’m curious, do you believe in love at first sight? And do you believe there is an abundance of men ready and wanting to fall in love with you?
If you asked me this question 10 years ago, I probably would have given you an awkward head tilt and a, “are you crazy?” look on my face.
Living in Montreal, I heard women say (on the daily!) that there are no good men in Montreal, no men who want to date seriously.
But I had a sneaking suspicion they weren’t the women I should be listening to (or surrounding myself with).
It’s a good thing, I started creating some distance!
Because a few short years later (ok, sometimes they felt like very long years), I had a chance encounter with the love of my life in the most serendipitous way on a street corner in Old Montreal (at 3 freaking AM).
But let me back up for a moment.
Previous to this meeting, I had gone through a dry spell of meeting good men.
I could feel the doubt creeping in, so I decided to change the focus from meeting someone, to getting much better acquainted (and more in love) with myself.
I journeyed this path for a couple of years. Until days before this chance encounter, I started to see the downpour of men; literally swarming all around me.
I was seeing the options. And no longer feeling thirsty for it, I stepped into the position of the “chooser”.
It was around the time of Grand Prix weekend, here in Montreal.
I was working for a magazine, and we were hosting a party in Old Montreal. I kid you not, there were three “suitors” waiting for me at this party! Like I said, #options.
Still, no one quite clicked for me. Instead of feeling down about it, I felt thrilled about it. Could the dry spell be over?
As the party came to a close, I was the only one left behind from our team. Me, the club owner, and some guests.
I so vividly remember waiting in that office trying not to fall asleep and wanting to leave. A voice told me to wait a few minutes. So I listened. Just as I was about to leave, I heard that voice again, “5 more minutes.” At the time, I thought this had everything to do with the party, venue, collecting the funds etc.
Little did I know, the Universe had much bigger plans for me. 𝑳𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔, 𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔.
After 5 minutes were up, I collected my things and got myself outside to wait for my cab.
And then, JUST as the cab was pulling up to me, I saw this fine specimen of a man standing in front of me. His smile blew me away.
He said, “you have beautiful eyes”.
I replied, “you have amazing hair.”
He helped me get my things into the cab, so kind, so gentle.
He asked if I was a DJ (I was carrying a bunch of records!), which I obviously replied no to (with I’m sure a flirty little comment that I can no longer recall).
Then he said, “I can’t believe I’m meeting you just as you’re leaving. Can I get your phone number?”
My response was, “You’re so cute – yes!”. For those of you who know me, you know that’s not a thing I would say to guy I don’t know on a street corner at 3am.
Needless to say, I heard from him. And he’s who you all know to be my lovely husband, father of our child and life partner, Jack.
So why am I telling you this?
Because I could have easily bought into the story that there are no good (or tall!) men in Montreal. Side note, he’s both 🙂
But I didn’t. I bought into my own version of the story. And on the days when I couldn’t quite believe that there were indeed an abundance of good men in Montreal wanting to “fall in love” with me, I focused on being my own loving self instead.
I walked my path, steadily. Not knowing exactly where it would lead but knowing without a doubt that I was destined to a great life, and lots of love.
So if you find yourself needing that reminder today, consider this it:
You are destined for a beautiful life, and incredible love. And your belief in this, is going to help you create it.
Peace & love,
